inspired by Koe no Katachi ( Silent Voice/Shape of Voice)
A/N: I’m glad I can hear and see things (even with glasses); I’m so happy I can walk, run, and have hands. I can live everyday life without troubles, even though there are troubles. I have experience with not hearing things. Once, I couldn’t hear in my left ear and barely in my right ear. It was because of dirt in my ears that blocked my ear inside. After I visited the doctor, I could hear properly again. I can’t see things correctly without glasses or contact lenses. But I’m still healthy, so I can live an everyday life that many people can’t. A shape of Voice is a sad anime, but you can learn from it that you must not bully people who can’t hear or have some disabilities. You should treat them like ordinary people or be friendly. But, sadly, the world is like that. Sorry, I got carried away. Now to the story.
I was living the average life of an ordinary girl. I have a brother and a sister; I’m a high schooler and a huge fan of the K-pop group BTS. I love them, but I was not a crazy fan nor fangirling when I watched their MVs. They were like brothers to me. Little did I know that my life would change after meeting them in person and befriending them.
Flashback
I was at school. I decided to confess to my crush, so we met on the rooftop. I said I loved him. He listened to me and then rejected me. I was crying. He left for class, but I stayed. I didn’t see anything when I ran away. I run away from school. I was running through the streets, not caring about my surroundings. I bumped into a person.
It was a man, and I fell. He helped me on my legs, and I apologised with tears still in my eyes. I looked at him. He was handsome, even with a face mask and black sunglasses.
“Are you alright? Why are you crying?” he asked me.
I was surprised. I quickly wiped my tears away.
“I’m alright. Sorry that I bumped into you. I had to look where I was going,” I bowed to the man.
“It’s alright. Could you tell me what happened? Why were you crying?” he asked curiously.
“I…..I-I-I got…….rejected,” I whispered, but he heard the last word.
“Can I invite you for a hot chocolate? It’s best for a broken heart,” he said with a smile behind his mask.
“You don’t have to…… I don’t want to bother you,” I said shyly.
“You’re not bothering me at all. And I got some free time. I want to help you to feel better,” the man said while tilting his head to the left.
“Okay, I will accept your help. You’re too kind when I’m bumped into you and all…..” I said and looked away from him.
I was shy and not good at talking with guys. He was also a stranger. But I accepted his offer and went with him to the café. I wasn’t here even once, and it was a pretty café. We talked a little about school and me. Also, he shared some thoughts and experiences with me. When our offer came – mine was hot chocolate, his was caramel macchiato – he put away his mask but not his glasses. I looked at him and realised he was BTS’ Jimin because I had seen many photos of him with sunglasses. I looked away, blushing.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“You’re cute with the foam at the mouth,” I spoke quietly.
He quickly wiped it with a napkin. He blushed a little and smiled at me. I looked away, blushing too. I couldn’t believe I was in a café with him. It was unbelievable for a fan like me.
“Is something wrong? Why are you so suddenly quiet?” he asked, confused.
“It’s just that……. I recognised you…..” I said and looked at him.
He was surprised and shocked a little too.
“So you are a fan then, right?” he spoke to me. “You like K-pop. What’s your favourite group?”
“I am….. K-pop fan,” I said quietly and looked down. “And I love the most……. Bangtan Sonyeondan,” I said shyly.
“So, you know my group,” he smiled shyly.
“N-ne….” I answered and drank my hot chocolate.
We talked a little more, and then we went our separate ways.
End of flashback
We met after that at the fan meeting. He recognised me, we talked a little and then I left. We met at the concert too. I got lost while looking for a bathroom and bumped into him again. He introduced me to other members because Taehyung and Jungkook were with him then. The whole group became my friends. We met when they had a day off, or one of the members could meet me. Jungkook was initially shy, but he got used to me after some time.
Present
I have to go to the doctor for a check-up. In the morning, I didn’t go to school because of it. My classmates will give me homework later. I prepared and left my house.
At doctor
She did a regular check-up. She took my blood and looked at my ears too. She then sent me away, telling me the results would probably be out next week.
Two weeks passed. I was okay, healthy, attending school, sometimes meeting with BTS, and listening to their music and messages. Then during the weekend, my life was crushed. The results from the doctor came.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. But your results are not good. It looks like you have inflammation of the middle ear. If your ears hurt lately, it was because of this. There is a cure for it, but your blood results show otherwise. You have fewer leukocytes. So you might be deaf for the rest of your life. Visit me as soon as you can.” the doctor said and ended the call.
I was devastated. Why something like this had to happen to me?
Time skip
I woke up, prepared for school and took pills. It’s already been a month since I was at the doctor. It was alright. It was healing.
I went to school. It was normal until a new girl appeared with her gang. I met them when I hurried to PE class and accidentally bumped into her. They started a fight. They pushed, kicked, and threw me to the ground, where I lost consciousness.
~AUTHOR’S POV~
After 2 hours, some pupils found you lying on the ground. They called an ambulance because you were bleeding from your head and slightly from your ears. In the hospital, you undergo surgery because of bleeding in your brain.
You woke up after two weeks. You see everything around you but can’t hear anything. You didn’t know, but you were screaming. The nurse came with the doctor running into your room. They tried to calm you down. The nurse had to give you anti-depressants to settle you down. There was a board for you to write your questions and get answers.
~YOUR POV~
In the evening and almost the whole night, I cried because I won’t hear my friends’ voices again. I didn’t want to see them. Nor my family. I know they are worried and already know, but I don’t want to worry them more than they are now. My family visited me. And I didn’t tell BTS about it.
Next day
My mother came with my sister. When they left, there was some commotion outside. I saw some nurses being excited. I decided that I would go to the rooftop for some fresh air. I didn’t want to meet the boys, so I got in my wheelchair and left my room. I was enjoying the scenery and fresh air, blowing my hair on the rooftop. Tears were falling from my eyes. Then a hand touched my shoulder. I looked at it slowly and then up at its owner.
~AUTHOR POV~
You looked up and saw standing there, boys. They were slightly confused. They came to your room, but you weren’t there, so they asked a nurse, and she told them you could be on the roof. They came and saw you. So they called out to you. You didn’t react. So they came nearer to you, and Jimin touched your shoulder. He was smiling when you looked up.
“We were looking for you. We wanted to visit you when we heard you were in the hospital. So we came,” Jimin finished and then saw your tears. His smile fell.
“Why are you crying? Did something happen?” he frowned. “Tell me what happened. Did someone do something to you? Tell me, and I will punish him.”
You cried even more. BTS stood around your wheelchair, looking confused. You looked down and then at the scenery again.
“I am deaf,” you said and pointed to your ears, showed X with your fingers and shook your head.
BTS found out. In the end, you told them. They became sad. They took you to your room again, and you communicated with a board. They told you they would stay by your side no matter what.
After two months
You were learning sign language; also, Jimin and Jungkook learned to communicate with you through it. You hang out with them even when you can’t hear them and miss their voices. You knew you would be deaf your whole life you got before you. But you have friends that will make sure you are happy, they will make you laugh, and you won’t feel alone.
1684 WORDS. Sorry if it’s too long. And I don’t know much about medicine, but I tried. Sometimes I thought while writing this that I would turn it into another book. But in the end, I didn’t.
Sometimes I feel like Shōya Ishida (male protagonist) from Koe no Katachi. All around me had a big X on the face when I passed them because I thought they didn’t care about me. I am just another person from a crowd who can’t speak properly for herself. I feel like this, but my friends won’t let me think about it for too long. I am happy I have friends that can make me smile.
